WRFC took on last seasons league champions HURT at Alden Bridge on Saturday, December 2nd. The game kicked off early as both teams were ready and anxious to get the season started. HURT used their patterns and structure to score two tries early in the game. WRFC scored their first points of the season with a penalty kick by Wian Engelbrecht for a score of 3-10 16min into the game. That helped settle things down for WRFC. The backline adjusted their defense and we began to put pressure on HURT. After 15 min of great play Captain Chris Saxon scored WRFC’s first try of the season to bring the score to 10-12. Right before halftime HURT scored two tries to take the score to 10-26. In the second half WRFC came out and put on some good phases of play and were rewarded with a try by Dominique Dobbins and conversion by Wian. HURT capitalized on some unforced errors by WRFC to take the game away towards the end of the second half with the final score being 22-41. HURT showed a little more patience and used their experience to play their game. WRFC played periods of great rugby and finished the game realising that we could compete with last seasons champions. The score line did not reflect the equality overall and competitiveness of the game. With two weeks to go before the next game WRFC is confident that they have what it takes to improve and mount a serious challenge to the league this season.
